How do eBay fees work for UK private sellers?

If you sell as a private seller on eBay.co.uk, you pay no final value fee on a normal sale (vehicles are the exception). You keep your full price. eBay charges the buyer instead, with a Buyer Protection fee added at checkout.

The Buyer Protection fee, paid by the buyer

The fee is £0.10 per item, plus a percentage of the item price worked out in bands. Postage is not included.

Up to £207%
£20 to £3004%
£300 to £4,0002%
Above £4,000Nothing

For a £50 item, the buyer pays £0.10 + £1.40 (7% of £20) + £1.20 (4% of £30) = £2.70 on top of your price.

Fees you may still pay as a seller

  • International fee: 3% of the total sale (item, postage and any taxes) when the buyer is outside the UK.
  • Listings: the first 300 listings a month are free, then 35p each.
  • Optional extras such as promoted listings are charged on top if you choose them.

Business sellers

Business sellers pay a final value fee on the item and postage: 11.9% for clothes and shoes (trainers 7% at £100 or more), 12.9% for women’s bags up to £800 then 7%, 10.9% for collectables and toys and 12.9% for most other categories. On top come £0.30 per order up to £10 (£0.40 above) and a 0.35% regulatory fee. eBay quotes these fees before VAT and adds 20% VAT; tick “I’m VAT registered” in the calculator if you reclaim it.

Selling on eBay.com (US)

US sellers without a Store pay 13.6% of the total sale (item and postage) up to $7,500, then 2.35%, plus $0.30 per order up to $10 and $0.40 above. Trading cards pay 13.25%. Athletic shoes pay 8% from $150 with no per-order fee, and 13.6% below.

Frequently asked questions

Does eBay charge private sellers in the UK?

Not on a normal sale. UK private sellers pay no final value fee, except on vehicles. You pay 3% if the buyer is outside the UK, and 35p per listing after 300 free listings a month.

What is the eBay Buyer Protection fee?

A fee eBay adds to the buyer’s total when they buy from a private seller: £0.10 plus 7% of the item price up to £20, 4% from £20 to £300 and 2% from £300 to £4,000.
